Linnie Lindsay "Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” ― Pablo Picasso |
The Arts provide a language for understanding and communicating ideas and emotion. John Ruskin observed, “Great nations write their autobiographies in three manuscripts; the book of their deeds, the book of their words, and the book of their art.” I believe that the Arts for children provide a balance in the curriculum that is important for the development of the whole child by increasing avenues of expression, which contribute to and deepen the total learning process. The arts develop creative thinkers, who are comfortable making connections and effective communicators through multiple intelligences—all critical skills to be successful contributing members in their community, country and world.
I have taught 26 years in Santa Barbara, California, and 2 years in Saint George, Utah. I have taught every grade, Kindergarten through 6th grade and had always integrated the arts into my general curriculum to deepen understanding and for the sake of sparking creativity, inspiration and imagination. After many years as a regular education and bilingual teacher in charter schools, gifted magnet schools, international baccalaureate schools, I'm focusing the remainder of my career in art education. Teaching art is what I believe to be my true calling. I am dedicated to helping students explore their creativity, and in so doing, learn to communicate their ideas, open their minds to consider and respect others' ideas, better understand their world and other subjects, and learn to take risks to learn and grow. I consider it a great honor and privilege to be working with the Kindergarten through Second Grade classes at G.W.A.!
It is my belief that specialized teachers should also be practicing in their field, so I am also an exhibiting artist myself, mostly in oils and watercolors, but who can harness the creativity of an artist?! I love oil pastels, chalk pastels, printmaking, ceramics and creating my own mobiles of the huge collection of beachcombed material I have collected over 40 years of living in Santa Barbara. I have also participated in the iMadonnari Italian Street Painting Festival there for 17 years, and I look forward to doing the same at the Kayenta Arts Festival in the years to come.
My husband, Kelly Lindsay, is a geologist and a horticulturalist, and I am blessed with two daughters, Aimee, 38, an Art History grad from UCSB, and Mireya, 27, Art and Architecture from Cornell University. My mother, B.J.Keith, is a world renown sculptor under the name of C.Jeré for the past 35 years and an oil painter. I guess art is in the blood in my family! In my free time, when I'm not art-making, I travel, hike, river-raft, and kayak through this beautiful country of ours, and my writing and painting is inspired by the same.
